German Car Parts co Webasto Plans to Take Local Unit Public

Webasto aims for a $400-500 million IPO of its Indian division by 2027, according to reports, as the German auto parts manufacturer looks to take advantage of the increasing demand for sunroofs in the globe's third-largest car market.

The anticipated public offering is projected to value Webasto Roofsystems India at approximately $2 billion. Axis Capital and JM Financial have been tasked with overseeing the IPO process.

Webasto, the worldwide leader in retractable roof systems, has built a solid presence in India, including major automakers Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, Hyundai Motor India, and Kia India as its clients.

In India, the increasing demand for passenger vehicles with sunroofs has led Webasto to greatly enlarge its manufacturing presence in the nation. Alongside its current plants in Pune and Chennai, the company is establishing a new plant in Haryana, expected to commence operations in the December quarter.

Positioned between Manesar and Kharkhoda in Haryana, the new facility aims to facilitate an annual production capacity of approximately 500,000 units. Webasto mentioned that the expansion was fueled by ongoing increases in sunroof sales.

Webasto Roofsystems India had a robust showing in FY25, as revenue increased by 31 percent to Rs.946.5 crore, up from Rs.720 crore in FY24. The firm achieved a Rs.31.4 crore net profit, recovering from a loss of Rs.9.1 crore a year ago, supported by operating leverage and enhanced margins.

Ebitda almost surged to Rs.102 crore from Rs.36 crore in FY24, based on the most recent data from the Registrar of Companies (RoC).

Since 2019, Webasto has committed over 110 million to grow its operations in India. According to a recent company statement, it intends to invest a total of 174 million by 2030.

India's automotive industry is experiencing multiple IPOs as parts makers and vehicle tech firms seek to leverage robust local demand, increasing exports, and a heightened interest from investors in manufacturing ventures.

Carlyle, a private equity firm, intends to initiate a $500 million IPO for its Indian automotive venture, Highway Roop Precision Technologies.

Webasto's suggested listing would contribute to an expanding pipeline of automotive IPOs in India, following launches by firms like Belrise Industries and Carraro India.
