EU Urges US to Reinstate 15 Percent Tariff Arrangement Swiftly

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič held discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer prior to what is anticipated to be a contentious round of talks among EU nations and MEPs regarding the execution of the EU-US trade agreement, as Washington urges the EU to swiftly remove tariffs on US products.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič on Tuesday called on the US to fulfill its commitments under the EU-US trade agreement during a meeting in Paris with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

In recent days, tensions have heightened regarding the execution of the EU-US trade agreement achieved nearly a year ago in Turnberry, Scotland, after US President Donald Trump warned of a 25percent tariff on EU vehicles, violating the pact that limits US tariffs on EU products to 15percent.

The agreement faced additional turmoil in February when the White House imposed new tariffs after the US Supreme Court deemed the 2025 tariffs unlawful.

A spokesperson for the European Commission stated on Tuesday that during the 90-minute discussion with Greer, Šefčovič urged for a “quick return” to the established Turnberry terms, signifying a 15percent all-inclusive tariff rate.

The US presently levies a 10percent tariff on European Union goods in addition to existing duties prior to Trump's re-election in 2025, with rates differing among EU products. Combined tariffs can now go up to 30percent on some EU exports, like cheese, surpassing the 15percent limit set in the EU–US deal.

In the meeting, Šefčovič informed his counterpart about the EU's progress on the agreement, the spokesperson remarked, “to clarify” the EU’s current position.

MEPs aim to introduce protections that would tie EU tariff reductions to the US fulfilling its part of the deal. They are additionally advocating for a "sunset provision" that would end the agreement in March 2028 unless it is extended.
