Stellantis to Bring China-Built Jeep to Europe by 2030

Stellantis NV intends to launch a new Jeep model in Europe by 2030 that will be produced in China, strengthening the automaker's collaboration with a partner at one of its key brands.

Stellantis and Dongfeng Motor Corp. will collaboratively manufacture the large SUV, which will debut with other new models featuring the renowned name, Fabio Catone, Jeep's head in Europe, stated during a media call. By the decade's end, Stellantis will offer six Jeep models in the region, up from the current two, he stated.

The fresh initiative marks the group's shift away from a retreat from China under ex-CEO Carlos Tavares, who surprised Dongfeng in 2022 by indicating Stellantis might cease production in the largest car market globally.

Antonio Filosa, the current CEO, has recently reinstated the partnership, and the new Jeep SUV will be produced at Dongfeng's plant in Wuhan. The partners are also establishing a venture that will enable the state-supported Chinese company to produce its own vehicles at a Stellantis facility in France.

Along with Ram, Peugeot, and Fiat, Jeep is among the four brands Stellantis has identified for prioritization in its investment strategies. It serves as the sole truly international emblem for the group and is deemed essential for the success of a current turnaround initiative.

In addition to Dongfeng, Stellantis is enhancing collaboration with Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology Co., highlighting how Western carmakers are increasingly depending on Chinese production, technology, and supply chains to maintain their competitiveness.

Since 2023, Stellantis has sold roughly 280,000 Jeep Avengers in Europe. The region also offers the Compass model and plans to launch an all-electric Recon next year.

According to Catone, the company currently has no intentions to reintroduce the Wrangler after it was discontinued in Europe because of stringent emissions regulations.

Stellantis has often promoted Jeep as the ultimate American automobile. When asked if customers might be deterred by a version made in China, Catone stated: “Jeep is definitely a US brand, but it’s also global.”
