Britain’s newly appointed Defence Secretary Wes Streeting mentioned that Europe will one day “appreciate” US President Donald Trump for compelling NATO members to spend more on their own defense and lessen their historical dependence on Washington.
In his initial significant television interview after assuming office, Streeting asserted that despite Trump’s often contentious approach, his insistence on European allies had initiated a long-needed transition toward increased military self-sufficiency.
Streeting rejected claims that restoring relations with the United States necessitated Britain to "suck up" to Trump.
"The initial step is to avoid being overly flattering." I believe President Trump and his administration are not pursuing that, in fact. He speaks very directly. “He expresses his thoughts clearly and sincerely,” he stated.
When asked about his trust in Trump, Streeting expressed that he has faith in the United States and highlighted that the UK-US defence alliance is among the strongest globally.
Streeting claimed that Europe would ultimately gain from the US president's pressure regarding NATO.

“We don’t always agree with what he expresses." His methods aren't always to our liking. However, I sincerely believe that when this era of history is recorded, Europe will express gratitude towards President Trump for awakening us from our complacency, compelling us to become self-reliant and concluding the time of excessive dependence on the United States for defense," he stated.
Streeting remarked that his initial week as Defence Secretary showcased the extensive military collaboration between London and Washington.

He also disclosed that he had previously met US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, during which the UK emphasized its position against supporting offensive military action directed at Iran.

Nonetheless, he stated that both nations continued to be united on essential security goals, such as obstructing Iran from obtaining nuclear arms and enhancing NATO’s collective abilities.
