EWE and VERBUND Form JV for Major European Hydrogen Project

EWE AG and VERBUND AG will establish one of Europe's premier integrated hydrogen hubs in the Wesermarsch area through the "CHC Electrolysis JadeWeser" initiative, thus significantly advancing the creation of a unified European hydrogen economy. An independent project company will oversee the management of the project.

Central to the initiative is an electrolyzer capable of 500 megawatts, aiming for an annual output of approximately 50,000 tons of green hydrogen. The facility will link to the upcoming core hydrogen network and may provide green hydrogen for industrial use, transportation, and the energy sector starting in 2032. The integration of production, storage, and grid connectivity establishes a project of significant strategic value for the acceleration of hydrogen in Germany and Europe.

The creation of the joint venture between EWE Hydrogen GmbH and VERBUND Green Hydrogen GmbH arrives during a period of heightened consolidation within the hydrogen market. After the early years of market growth, it is evident that initiatives with both technological prowess and solid infrastructure, secure locations, reliable financial partners, and tangible marketing opportunities are especially successful.

EWE and VERBUND are combining their complementary skills throughout the entire hydrogen value chain for this partnership. The partners collectively possess hydrogen projects with an overall capacity of around 400 megawatts, which are either in development or currently operational.

"Through this partnership, we are establishing the groundwork for executing one of the most strategically significant hydrogen initiatives in Northern Germany." Nonetheless, additional regulatory changes are needed for a successful market expansion, including the EU's RFNBO regulations. Moreover, robust collaborations are crucial. VERBUND and EWE have accumulated significant expertise in large-scale hydrogen initiatives in recent years, which we are now merging. “According to Stefan Dohler, CEO of EWE AG, this will greatly aid in the successful execution of the project.

The JadeWeser electrolysis initiative is a crucial component of the collaborative hydrogen strategy of these companies and maintains a strong European orientation. The project significantly enhances supply security, facilitates the integration of European energy markets, and supports the attainment of European climate goals by linking to the German core hydrogen network and its potential incorporation into upcoming European hydrogen corridors.

"The transition to energy demands effective collaborations within Europe. Through this collaboration, we are merging the capabilities of two reputable energy firms and establishing the foundation for a reliable and competitive provision of green hydrogen. JadeWeser serves as a vital component for a prospective hydrogen economy in Europe," says Michael Strugl, CEO of VERBUND AG.
