Infineon VP Calls for Investment in Europe's Automated Chip Production

According to reports, Infineon Technologies has remarked that the European semiconductor industry needs more investment in automated, large-scale production plants.
As per reports, the remarks were given at an industry conference in Poland the previous Friday. Thomas Altenmueller, a Vice President at Infineon, noted that Chinese producers are swiftly increasing their expertise and capacity in power and analog chips, markets traditionally dominated by European companies. He characterized the competitive scenario as highly critical.
Chinese companies are said to be shifting due to export restrictions on advanced semiconductor manufacturing machinery. Altenmueller contended that Europe needs to attain greater scale and unify its operations.
He underscored the importance of automation and contemporary 300-millimeter wafer fabrication to enhance economies of scale and counterbalance relatively elevated labor costs. During the same event, STMicroelectronics representatives talked about methods for automating older factories that cannot be fully upgraded, such as incorporating robots to enhance productivity.
Though European semiconductor manufacturers occupy a minor share of the AI accelerator market, Altenmueller highlighted considerable future promise for energy-efficient power delivery chips, crucial for data centers. The European Union has introduced a Chips Act aimed at increasing the bloc's share of global production.
