Irish Data Watchdog Opens Investigation into X Over Grok Images

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has declared the commencement of an investigation into X regarding the utilization of the AI tool Grok for the production of sexualized images featuring both adults and children.

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is currently conducting an investigation into the alleged production and dissemination of intimate and sexually explicit images on the X platform without the consent of the individuals involved, which may put their personal information at risk.

The investigation will center on the innovative artificial intelligence features linked to the Grok advanced language model through the @Grok account on the X platform. The decision to initiate the investigation was communicated to X yesterday.

As per the DPC, the inquiry aims to assess X's adherence to its responsibilities outlined in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This evaluation includes examining X's compliance with principles of data processing, the legality of processing, implementing data protection measures by design and default, and the necessity of conducting a data protection impact assessment.

The European Commission began an inquiry to determine if Grok is distributing unlawful material, including manipulated sexualized images, within the European Union.

"The DPC has been engaging with XIUC (X Internet Unlimited Company) since media reports first emerged a number of weeks ago concerning the ‌alleged ability of X users to prompt the @Grok account on X to generate sexualised images of real people, including children", said Deputy Commissioner Graham Doyle.

"As the Lead Supervisory Authority for XIUC across the EU/EEA, the DPC has commenced a large-scale inquiry, " Doyle said, adding that this would examine XIUC's compliance with some of its "fundamental obligations under the GDPR in relation to the matters at hand".
