Irish PM Announces €505m in Fuel-Cost Measures

The Irish government has revealed a plan totaling €505m (£440m) to assist those "most affected" by increasing fuel prices.

Global fuel prices have surged due to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, while protesters in the Republic of Ireland have obstructed fuel distribution centers and several key highways and roads in opposition.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin stated on Sunday that his government is prolonging temporary actions to lower excise duty on petrol, diesel, and marked gas oil.

They will be delaying a rise in the carbon tax and will announce a subsidy program for fuels aimed at farmers and fisheries.

Martin stated that groups "with a self-identified" mandate have enforced blockades.

"They have clearly dismissed the authority of democratic representatives to articulate their views and have moved far beyond merely stating their perspective," he said.

"No one is entitled to obstruct access to our nation," he mentioned.

The support package will extend the reduction on excise duty from the end of May to the end of July.

A decrease of 10 cents per litre will occur for both diesel and petrol.

And a decrease of 2.4 cents per litre on marked fuel/oil.

Cuts in fuel prices will take effect from midnight on Tuesday, pending approval from the Oireachtas (Irish parliament).

The rise in carbon tax will be delayed from May until the budget in October.

Police have cleared protesters from several locations.

Gardaí (Irish police) relocated protesters from O'Connell Street in Dublin, the M50 motorway close to the city, and Galway port during an operation.

A demonstration continues to obstruct the N1 southbound close to Dundalk, a key road linking Dublin and Northern Ireland, as well as additional routes like the M7.

Soon after 03:30 local time, gardaí requested individuals inside tractors and trailers on O'Connell Street to vacate the area, and they all complied peacefully.
