Chief Technology Officer

Leadership across the world is increasingly defined by resilience, adaptability, and the ability to navigate continuous technological disruption. Modern leaders are expected to combine strategic foresight with executional excellence, fostering innovation while ensuring sustainable growth. Influence today is earned through agility, perseverance, and the capability to transform complexity into opportunity in an ever-evolving global environment.

In this dynamic landscape, leaders like Luigi Vassallo stand out for translating vision into tangible transformation. Within Italy’s distinctive leadership ecosystem, where heritage industries intersect with rapid digital advancement, he exemplifies the balance between tradition and innovation. As Chief Technology Officer at Sara Assicurazioni, he brings over two decades of experience spanning telecommunications, global events, and insurance, consistently driving technological maturity and organizational evolution.

Over the course of his career, he has achieved several defining milestones. During his tenure as Vice President at Telecom Italia, he led the first wave of digital services built on broadband infrastructure, positioning the organization at the forefront of innovation. His involvement in Expo Milan 2015 further demonstrated his ability to contribute to large-scale, high-impact transformations. Over the past nine years at Sara Assicurazioni, he has been instrumental in transforming a traditionally structured organization into one of Italy’s most digitally mature insurers.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, he is a passionate technologist, an avid reader deeply attached to his Kindle, a sports enthusiast with a strong affinity for football and the NBA, and an endurance sports devotee, particularly triathlon. He also dedicates part of his time as a volunteer rescuer and remains conscious of managing modern digital dependencies. Anchored in resilience, his enduring success mantra is simple yet powerful: never give up.

Resistance to change is a natural part of digital transformation, but it can be addressed with a consistent approach

How has the adoption of AI-driven semantic search and automation influenced real-world outcomes within your organization?

We are extensively exploring generative and agentic AI, and the results have been impactful. These technologies are already improving productivity by streamlining both routine and complex tasks across teams. In areas like claims management, automation is delivering faster processing, greater efficiency, and enhanced service quality. Several workflows are either fully automated or in transition. Beyond operational improvements, AI is also supporting business growth by enabling sales teams with advanced tools that strengthen customer engagement and overall value delivery.

How can organizations encourage AI literacy and drive adoption among teams hesitant to embrace change?

Resistance to change is a natural part of digital transformation, but it can be addressed with a consistent approach. Leadership must set the tone by actively adopting and advocating AI. Continuous training and structured learning build confidence in using new tools. Most importantly, the narrative must shift, the real risk lies not in AI, but in failing to adopt it, as future competitiveness will depend on how effectively professionals leverage AI.

How can organizations balance automation with human judgment in sensitive areas like claims processing?

In regulated industries like insurance, maintaining human oversight is essential. While AI enhances efficiency and supports analysis, it cannot replace accountability. In claims processing, AI assists with evaluation and automation, but final decisions remain with humans, ensuring fairness, compliance, and trust through a human-in-the-loop approach. It is also important to avoid over-reliance on AI as an infallible authority. Instead, AI should augment human capabilities, with its effectiveness ultimately depending on the competence and judgment of the individual using it.

How would you define your leadership approach, and what core principles guide your style?

My leadership style is collaborative and empowering, focused on setting clear direction while ensuring alignment with team goals. I strongly emphasize individual ownership, where team members take full responsibility for execution once a plan is agreed upon. Rather than acting as a controller, I position myself as a supportive resource, offering guidance, problem-solving, and direction when needed. This approach fosters accountability, builds trust, and strengthens confidence within the team, while ensuring collective alignment toward shared objectives and successful outcomes.

What future direction do you envision for your role?

Looking forward, I see my role becoming more closely aligned with business strategy as the traditional CTO or CIO position continues to evolve. Technology leaders today must bridge business objectives and technological possibilities while understanding both domains deeply. My future focus is to lead technology initiatives while strengthening this integration, guiding organizations to identify opportunities, drive innovation, and achieve growth through the strategic application of technology, particularly in the context of rapid advancements in software development and artificial intelligence.

Based on your experience, what guidance would you offer to aspiring leaders in this field?

The role of technology leaders has transformed and is no longer limited to managing IT budgets or infrastructure. Aspiring leaders need to stay closely connected to emerging technologies while also understanding business dynamics. As technology becomes more accessible and decentralized, business units often adopt tools independently. To remain effective, leaders must be adaptable, committed to continuous learning, and act as enablers who link technological innovation with business value, ensuring that technology drives meaningful outcomes for the organization.
