You possess a diverse career spanning science, healthcare, and leadership. What key experiences have most shaped your approach to leading in complex environments?

My journey began with a deep curiosity for biology and medicine, which led me to pursue a PhD in immunology. Early on, I transitioned into a biotech startup environment, which was instrumental in shaping my business acumen while allowing me to retain a strong scientific mindset. Over time, I moved across diverse domains, from biotech to academia at ETH, where as a project lead, I helped build a large biomedical technology platform from the ground, to integrated healthcare, and now to telemedicine. These shifts in perspective have been invaluable. They strengthened my ability to approach complex challenges with critical thinking, adaptability, and a strong team orientation, qualities essential for leading in dynamic, complex environments.

What inspired you to focus on digital health and telemedicine for the long term in your career?

My interest in telemedicine grew while working in integrated healthcare, where I observed significant gaps between providers. These silos often disrupted the patient journey. Telemedicine offers a powerful way to bridge these gaps and create a more seamless, patient-centric experience. Today, with rapid technological advancements, remote care is not only more feasible but also more impactful. It allows us to extend high-quality care beyond physical settings, making healthcare more accessible and efficient.

Telemedicine has evolved from a convenience to a necessity. What changes have you come across in patient expectations today?

Patient expectations have shifted significantly Accessibility is now a major priority; people expect medical advice to be available anytime, anywhere. This is partly driven by a shortage of healthcare professionals and changing societal behaviours. Additionally, younger populations tend to seek quicker reassurance regarding their health. Telemedicine can address these needs effectively while also reducing long-term healthcare costs by e.g., minimizing unnecessary emergency visits. It’s important to recognize that telemedicine provided by experienced doctors in ambulatory care today can in half of the patient requests replace physical care. I expect future innovations to be able to increase the share of telemedical care significantly.

With rising demand for telehealth services, how do you balance accessibility with maintaining high-quality medical care?

Quality remains our top priority. We invest heavily in training our doctors, including comprehensive onboarding programs and continuous coaching. Telemedicine requires a different skill set compared to traditional practice, so we ensure our teams are well-prepared. We also rely on structured guidelines, performance metrics, and patient feedback to maintain high standards. This combination allows us to scale access without compromising the quality of care.

What is your leadership approach to fostering innovation while ensuring accountability?

Innovation thrives in a collaborative environment. I strongly believe in teamwork and bringing diverse perspectives together to solve complex problems. At the same time, accountability is essential. We are a data-driven organization with clear goals and measurable outcomes. Importantly, we place patients at the center of everything we do. Combining medical expertise, technological capability, and emotional intelligence helps us build a culture that is both innovative and responsible.

How do you envision the role of telemedicine in national healthcare systems over the next decade?

Telemedicine will play a crucial role in addressing the growing gap between patient demand and available healthcare professionals. AI and digital tools will help reduce administrative burdens, allowing doctors to focus more on patient interaction. We will also see a rise in home-based diagnostics and treatment. However, maintaining meaningful doctor-patient interactions will remain essential. The future lies in offering multiple modes of care - digital, physical, and hybrid:to meet diverse patient needs.

What excites you most about the next chapter of your professional journey?

We are at a pivotal moment where medicine and technology are converging at an unprecedented pace. At Medgate, we can lead this transformation despite being a mid-sized organization. I am particularly excited about advancing remote diagnostics and leveraging new technologies to redefine patient care. The environment reminds me of the early days of biotech, full of energy, innovation, and possibility. It’s an incredibly rewarding space to be in.
