Albania’s Edi Rama Calls for Bold European Expansion

In the city that symbolized Europe's split and reunification, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama presented an ambitious vision for the continent's future, calling on the European Union to demonstrate the same strategic bravery that facilitated German reunification over thirty years ago.
Speaking to top German business executives at the German Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations in Berlin, Rama contended that Europe is nearing a pivotal moment in its history. One that necessitates leadership instead of bureaucracy.
“Berlin, the location where arguably the most significant geopolitical change of our era materialized.” And not solely due to a wall collapsing. However, following the fall of the wall, a leader arose with the bravery to comprehend what history required thereafter.
Helmut Kohl regarded German reunification not as a bureaucratic task. He viewed it as a geopolitical requirement. In defiance of warning. In opposition to doubt. “Contrary to the prevailing beliefs of the period,” he stated in his address.
The Albanian leader consistently referenced former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl as a model of political leadership that understood strategic realities prior to institutional frameworks fully aligning.

“I am growing more convinced that Europe is nearing a comparable moment.” A time when persisting in handling reality through protocols, doubts, and established beliefs is turning riskier than making strategic choices. A moment that I would characterize as a new Helmut Kohl moment.
Rama asserts that the European Union is strategically erring by contemplating the continent's future framework while excluding the Western Balkans.
"Since Europe currently confronts an issue strikingly akin to what Germany encountered at that time." He highlighted the increasing significance of energy infrastructure, digital networks, military mobility, and essential raw materials, contending that the area has become vital to Europe's objectives.

“The energy pathways Europe requires traverse our landscape.” The digital networks desired by Europe necessitate our land. The essential minerals Europe has recently recognized as vital are located beneath our ground. China grasps this. Russia undoubtedly comprehends it. Europe gets it as well.

“However, it occasionally overlooks this when drafting its own plans,” Rama stated. Rama stated that for Albania, joining the EU is not just a political goal but also a transformative initiative.
