Energy Transition to Bolster UK Security and Stability, Minister Says

According to the government’s energy minister, renewable energy will strengthen the UK’s national security and enhance the nation’s resilience to potential threats or sabotage.
Michael Shanks stated that wind farms and solar panels spread across a wide area are significantly more challenging to target compared to large fossil fuel power plants.
They are also immune to supply disruptions, like the recent oil crisis triggered by the US-Israel conflict with Iran and the rising gas prices that ensued after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.
"We are facing a much more intricate threat environment than we have encountered previously." “That's accurate in the UK and throughout Europe,” Shanks stated.
Creating a decentralized energy network with numerous assets poses a lower risk of physical assault compared to large power plants. Transitioning to clean energy is the most effective approach to ensure our energy security in a world that is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

The Conservatives and Reform UK have advocated for increased drilling in the North Sea, instead of focusing on renewables. However, those claims were significantly challenged last week when the Guardian disclosed that Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency and a prominent energy economist, recommended against issuing new exploration licenses commercially and noted that prospective new fields already under the licensing framework, like Rosebank and Jackdaw, would have minimal impact on the UK's energy security or energy costs.
Defense specialists have urged the need for funding in wind turbines and solar energy systems to enhance the UK's national security against possible attacks or sabotage.

Multiple ex-military leaders have contacted governments, encouraging them to adopt renewable energy sources. Former Lt Gen Richard Nugee has stated that investing in renewable energy would enhance the UK's resilience. “To achieve a potent military deterrent, we require a robust homeland.” He stated, "To create a resilient nation, low-carbon energy plays a crucial role."

Shanks was addressing from Ukraine, where he visited energy initiatives over the weekend that received funding from the UK. “It’s crucial for me to witness directly the effects of Russia’s strikes on energy infrastructure in Ukraine, and to meet those working to restore that infrastructure and enhance resilience in the Ukrainian energy system,” he stated.
