Germany Eyes Thousands of Missiles, Including Ukraine's Bars Drones

Germany is in talks to purchase thousands of European-made missiles, including Ukraine’s Bars cruise missile drones, as Berlin moves to strengthen its military capabilities and deter potential Russian aggression, according to reports.
According to reports, Germany has decided to replenish its missile arsenal amid concerns over its ability to secure sufficient long-range strike weapons. The country is reportedly near the end of the waiting list for US-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, prompting it to explore alternative suppliers.
Officials from Germany’s Defence Ministry are reportedly negotiating with US defence startup Covenant to purchase thousands of Anthem ground-launched cruise missiles equipped with heavy payloads.
The proposed acquisition forms part of Germany’s broader effort to expand its strike capabilities and reduce reliance on limited supplies of American weapons.
Germany’s current cruise missile inventory is limited, with the Taurus being its only system of this type, according to the report. The air-launched missile, manufactured by MBDA and Saab AB, has a range of approximately 500 kilometres.

Ukraine’s Bars cruise missile drone is also among the weapons under consideration. Powered by a jet engine, the system was initially reported to carry a 22.5-kilogram warhead and have a range of up to 700 kilometres.

However, developers have reportedly enhanced the weapon’s capabilities, extending its range to 1,000 kilometres and increasing its warhead weight to 60 kilograms. Its speed has also been raised to more than 700 kilometres per hour, potentially improving its effectiveness in long-range strike missions.
The reported discussions highlight Germany’s growing focus on strengthening its conventional deterrence as European countries reassess their defence requirements amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.

If finalised, the proposed purchases could diversify Germany’s missile inventory while expanding its access to European-developed weapons technology. However, the reported negotiations do not necessarily mean that contracts have been signed or that the weapons have been formally ordered.
