Modal Labs in Talks to Raise at $2.5 Billion Valuation

Modal Labs, a burgeoning company that specializes in AI inference infrastructure, is currently in discussions with venture capitalists regarding a new funding round that would value the company at approximately $2.5 billion, according to reports.

If the deal is finalized on these terms, the investment round would result in a significant increase in the company's valuation from $1.1 billion, which was disclosed less than five months ago.

Reports indicate that Modal's annualized revenue run rate is estimated to be around $50 million.   It should be noted that the discussions are in their initial stages and the terms of the deal are subject to potential modifications.

Erik Bernhardsson, the co-founder and CEO of Modal Labs, refuted claims that his company was actively seeking funds and described recent discussions with venture capitalists as informal exchanges.

Modal's primary focus is on enhancing the process of inference, which involves executing trained artificial intelligence models to provide solutions to user queries. Enhancements in inference efficiency result in decreased computational expenses and minimized latency between a user's input and the AI's output.

Modal is currently among a select few companies in the field of inference that are capturing significant interest from investors. Just last week, Baseten, a competitor of Modal, made headlines by raising $300 million at a valuation of $5 billion, a substantial increase from its previous valuation of $2.1 billion recorded just a few months earlier in September.

Likewise, Fireworks AI, a provider of inference cloud services, managed to secure $250 million at a valuation of $4 billion in the month of October.

In January, the developers of the open-source inference project vLLM made public their successful transition of the tool into a venture capital-supported startup named Inferact. The project secured $150 million in initial funding, with leading investment from Andreessen Horowitz, resulting in a valuation of $800 million.

Concurrently, it was reported by TechCrunch that the creators of SGLang have launched a commercialized version under the name RadixArk. Sources revealed that RadixArk received seed funding at a valuation of $400 million, with primary investor being Accel.
