Von der Leyen to Visit Australia to Seal Trade Deal

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is planning to travel to Australia this month to clinch a security and trade deal, according to reports.
Her journey will take place after a meeting next week in Brussels between European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič and his Australian equivalent Don Farrell, according to reports. Anonymity was granted to both individuals since the schedules remain tentative.
The EU and Canberra are working to restart trade talks that fell apart at the close of 2023 due to disputes regarding beef and lamb quotas.
The quotas are currently under negotiation between Canberra and Brussels, according to reports.
Von der Leyen will embark on the over 20-hour flight to Australia immediately after her participation in the Munich Security Conference, scheduled for Feb. 13-15 in the German city.
When asked for a comment, Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson Olof Gill acknowledged the meeting between Šefčovič and Farrell but did not confirm von der Leyen’s trip to Australia.
“Discussions between the EU and Australia are in progress,” Gill stated. The EU is dedicated to enhancing ties with Australia, an important and similar ally. "Like always, advancement in the delicate stage of negotiations will hinge on content."
In December, EU nations permitted the Commission to engage in talks for a defense agreement with Australia. Finalizing such an agreement would follow security and defense alliances established with the U.K., Canada, and most recently, India.
A deal with Australia would signify a victory for the EU, as it would grant access to the nation's abundant supplies of critical minerals. Australia ranks as the top global producer of lithium and possesses the second-largest copper reserves in the world.
Following the EU's contentious Mercosur agreement with South American nations — which faced criticism from farmers, France, and doubtful lawmakers — the deal with Canberra is anticipated to incite resistance because of its substantial agricultural aspect.
