On Ukraine's Independence Day, the European Commission sanctioned €6.1 billion for new defense purchases for Ukraine.
The financial support includes air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars, reaffirming Europe’s dedication to aiding Ukraine’s defense and resilience against Russia’s persistent aggression, stated the EU Commission.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated: “On Ukraine’s Independence Day, Europe demonstrates our unwavering and tangible support. Today, we have allocated €6.1 billion for the air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radars that Ukraine requires immediately. As Russia escalates its assaults, we are increasing our support to assist Ukraine in safeguarding its citizens and securing its airspace. Europe supports Ukraine and will provide what is necessary, when it is necessary."
The funding is included in the €90 billion Ukraine Support Loan (UASL) and arrives as Russia intensifies assaults with ballistic missiles and drones. Given the 376 missile strikes documented in July, reinforcing Ukraine's air and missile defenses has become more critical.

The recent approval contributes to €16 billion in purchasing plans that have been sanctioned, with €8.35 billion already allocated. This aims to guarantee that Ukraine obtains essential defense materials promptly and in the necessary quantities.

The majority of the purchases will obtain products from defense companies in the European Union. In light of Russia's escalated deployment of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, the Commission has highlighted the necessity for a considerable rise in EU supplies by depleting stockpiles, adjusting order priorities, and boosting production efforts.

Ukraine's capacity for self-defense relies on the swift access to essential defense products. The UASL allocates €30 billion for budget support and €60 billion for defense in 2026-2027, which includes €28.3 billion in 2026 to enhance Ukraine’s defense industrial capabilities.
