Dr Nermine Habib
Founder & CEO
Europe has long been recognized as a global leader in healthcare, driven by strong public health systems, advanced medical research, and a commitment to patient-centered care. Within this landscape, Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma specialists hold a particularly important position. These experts are dedicated to restoring mobility, treating musculoskeletal injuries, and helping patients regain independence after accidents, degenerative conditions, or complex deformities. Advances in orthopaedic techniques, reconstructive procedures, and limb preservation strategies have significantly transformed patient care, enabling faster recovery and improved long-term outcomes. The growing emphasis on specialized foot and ankle surgery, trauma management, and diabetic limb preservation reflects the field’s continuous evolution toward more comprehensive and personalized treatment.
Among the distinguished leaders contributing to this advancement is Dr. Nermine Habib, Founder & CEO of Swiss Diabetic Foot Centers. Her journey into orthopaedic surgery was inspired by her grandfather, himself an orthopaedic surgeon, whose dedication to restoring mobility and relieving pain left a profound and lasting impression on her. Witnessing the transformative impact of his work motivated her to pursue a similar path in medicine.
Following her medical studies, Dr. Habib completed specialist training in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology in Switzerland. During this period, she developed a strong interest in foot and ankle surgery, which later evolved into a deep commitment to diabetic foot care. She was particularly drawn to the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives by helping them avoid disability, preserve independence, and return to activities they once believed were no longer possible.
Over the years, her clinical practice, research contributions, teaching initiatives, and leadership roles have reinforced her dedication to innovation, education, and multidisciplinary care. Today, diabetic limb preservation and advanced foot and ankle surgery remain central to her professional mission and vision for patient care. Let’s dive in to know more.
Looking back on your medical career, which achievements are you most proud of, and how have they influenced your approach to leadership and patient care?
Among my many accomplishments, the most meaningful has been helping patients preserve their limbs, mobility, and independence. I am also proud to have founded the Swiss Female Orthopaedics Association, which supports and empowers women pursuing careers in orthopaedic surgery. Serving on national and international orthopaedic boards and contributing to globally recognized research has further enriched my professional journey. Above all, balancing life as a mother, surgeon, and entrepreneur has taught me resilience, empathy, and perseverance. These experiences have shaped my belief that meaningful success comes from dedication, collaboration, and supporting others.
Building healthcare institutions while maintaining a demanding surgical career has been one of the greatest challenges of my professional life
What inspired the creation of the Swiss Diabetic Foot Centers, and what milestones have defined their success?
The Swiss Diabetic Foot Centers were established in response to a troubling reality: many patients were undergoing avoidable amputations due to delayed access to specialized care. My vision was to create dedicated centers where multidisciplinary teams could work together to deliver comprehensive treatment. One of our most significant achievements has been demonstrating that coordinated, patient-focused care can substantially reduce amputation rates while enhancing quality of life. Watching this model expand across Switzerland and positively transform patient outcomes has been incredibly rewarding and continues to inspire our mission.
How important is multidisciplinary collaboration in delivering successful outcomes for patients with diabetic foot conditions?
Multidisciplinary collaboration is fundamental to achieving the best patient outcomes. Conditions such as diabetic foot disease are complex and require expertise from multiple specialties. No single clinician can effectively address every aspect of diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. When surgeons, diabetologists, vascular specialists, podiatrists, wound-care professionals, nurses, and rehabilitation experts work together, patients benefit from faster interventions, more accurate treatment plans, and improved recovery. This integrated approach not only enhances clinical outcomes but also helps patients maintain their mobility, independence, and overall quality of life.
Can you share a challenge that tested your resilience as both a surgeon and healthcare entrepreneur, and what it taught you?
Building healthcare institutions while maintaining a demanding surgical career has been one of the greatest challenges of my professional life. There were times when I had to make difficult decisions under pressure, often with limited resources and high expectations. These experiences taught me the importance of adaptability, courage, and staying committed to a long-term vision despite short-term obstacles. Most importantly, they reinforced my belief that success is never achieved alone. Strong teams, mutual trust, and shared values are the foundation of sustainable growth and meaningful impact.
What legacy would you like to leave in healthcare, and what impact do you hope to have on future generations?
My aspiration is to help create a future where preventable amputations become increasingly rare and specialized diabetic foot care is accessible to every patient who needs it. I am equally passionate about supporting the next generation of women in orthopaedic surgery and fostering a more inclusive profession. If I leave a legacy, I hope it reflects clinical excellence, innovation, compassion, and leadership. More than personal achievements, I would like to be remembered for the opportunities I created, the professionals I inspired, and the lives I helped improve.
