Amazon Expands Robotics, Delivery Network in Europe

Amazon has unveiled a range of investments and innovations aimed at enhancing employee skills, accelerating international deliveries, modernizing and expanding its network in Europe, generating additional jobs throughout the region, and implementing advanced new robotics.

The company’s Delivering the Future event in London featured announcements that included a commitment exceeding €10 billion to enhance and expand fulfillment centers in Europe. With advanced robotics, the broadened reach of ultra-fast delivery services to additional international cities, and a significant worldwide investment in employee development through Career Choice.

These investments demonstrate Amazon's larger ambition to implement AI and robotics to assist its workforce by handling repetitive and labor-intensive tasks, allowing employees to concentrate on more skilled positions while ensuring quicker delivery of orders to customers.

Amazon's latest Proteus robot can now function anywhere items require transportation between locations, not limited to dock areas. Thanks to advancements in AI, workers can now control Proteus using simple, conversational text prompts without requiring technical commands or programming tools. A worker instructs it on the task at hand, and the robot determines the priority, path, and schedule.

Similar to its forerunner, the updated Proteus is crafted to handle strenuous jobs, transporting hefty carts and traversing extensive distances. This allows employees to concentrate on tasks such as overseeing inventory movement and maintaining quality assurance throughout Amazon's fulfillment system. It is now being tested in Amazon's laboratories, with a rollout in Europe scheduled for the first half of 2027.

Amazon is dedicating over €10 billion in the upcoming years to enhance and modernize fulfillment centers throughout Europe, boosting its robotics capabilities to assist workers and streamline operations.

The funding encompasses the development of Vulcan, Amazon's initial robot equipped with a sense of touch, and STARK, a novel robotic system that collaborates with workers to retrieve complete totes from conveyors and position them on carts. Amazon intends to grow STARK, initially tested in Barcelona, Spain, to 15 locations throughout Europe by 2027.
