Waymo to Enter Germany with Driverless Rides in 2027

Alphabet’s self-driving unit Waymo said it plans to launch robotaxi rides in Germany in 2027, marking its third international market and its first entry into the European Union.
Waymo will begin “phased” testing in Munich over the next few weeks, with plans to make its robotaxi service available to the public by the end of next year. The initial testing phase will focus on developing high-definition street maps, training autonomous specialists and adapting Waymo’s software to Munich’s “distinct driving conditions.”
“Munich is a world-class hub for mobility and engineering, and becoming part of this city marks an important milestone in our global expansion,” Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said in a company post.
Waymo has established itself as the leading robotaxi operator in the United States, although the autonomous vehicle industry remains in its early stages. The company currently operates in 11 U.S. cities and is working to expand its services to 19 additional locations, according to reports.

Last month, Waymo announced plans to expand into San Diego, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Tampa, Florida; and Denver, Colorado, as it continues to broaden its U.S. footprint.
The company’s move into Munich will also strengthen its international presence. London and Tokyo are currently its other international markets, where Waymo is testing its autonomous vehicles. Germany’s automotive expertise and Munich’s strong position in mobility and engineering make the city an important market for the company’s European expansion.
